In 1931 James Truslow Adams coined the phrase “American Dream” in his book
Epic of America.
He wrote, “The American Dream is that dream of a land in which
life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for
each according to ability or achievement.”
Adams went on to say, “It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely,
but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to
attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized
by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth
or position.”
Near the mid-century mark of the 1900’s, the American Dream took on a much
more materialistic feel than that of Adams’ original definition. The American
Dream of the 1950’s and latter half of the 20th century was to own a home with
a white-picket fence, have a car (maybe two), have 2.2 children, a dog, a cat,
and a steady job that lasted until retirement.
But what is the American Dream of today? I believe
the American Dream of today is still made up in part of the materialistic definition
of the late 20th century which rewarded achievement and prosperity; but also
incorporates much of James Truslow Adams original, idealistic postulation of
opportunity & higher
social order for all regardless of such “fortuitous circumstances” such
as birth or position.
The American Dream of today is about opportunity and prosperity. It contains
the principle that all men and women have the inherent and intrinsic right to
try and to fail; to pick themselves up and try again. And the American Dream
of today contains the belief that all men and women have the right not only to
achieve, but to exceed in any of their chosen endeavors.
So, why am I telling you all of this? I’m telling you all of this as a prelude

now, and in the past, many brokers who make over $100,000 annually year after

Oh, by the way, a final sales price of $200,000 is on the low end of the average
sale price for a business. We’ll let you do the figuring from here.
